I have chosen for my AS to study and make a magazine and so I have attempted to analyze 3 magazines in order to understand how they are organized in order to able to make one myself.

1.GLAMCULT / 2017 / ISSUE 4 / #125

COVER -

The masthead of this cover is ‘Glamcult’ displayed in a simple black font, it is not necessarily eye catching at first however obviously portrays the title as it is positioned at the top of the magazine and is the largest in writing. The title is made to be simple as is the magazine, while being complemented by the other writing on the cover displayed in a much stronger color, yellow and in a more interesting font.

The main image is a simple one, with two people holding each other in embrace, not necessarily attracting attention, however it does seem appealing as it is not like most magazine covers, it makes the cover interesting compared to the conventional magazines with just a a large photo of a model, this magazine transmits a sense of sensuality and strong portrayals of culture as it has diversity, with both people on the cover being African American which is not as common in over magazines, this magazine appeals to all audiences.

The selling/tagline of the magazine is portrayed with the subheading of ‘Worldwide Underground’. Possibly directing the issue to younger, rebellious and liberal audiences.

The cover lines are in an interesting font with the color yellow, complementing the simplicity of the rest of cover, giving it an edge. They are there to give important information about the whole of the issue, the names of the people who are possibly being interviewed and the theme of the issue.

TABLE OF CONTENTS -

The table is on the 10-11 pages of the magazine, at first it seems complicated and all over the place however is quite easy to understand after you get over the sort of futuristic content.

The titles and page numbers of each article is placed on the right hand of the spread, with three photos in total on both pages, one larger photo and two smaller ones all being black and white giving into the style of this magazine, trying to be as simple as possible while also showing a specific style at the same time. It is an aesthetic choice, with the titles also all being in capital letters directing the attention towards them.

DOUBLE SPREAD -

The double spread has a large image on the left hand side, portraying a man, the image is eye catching as it is calming to view, with gentle colors, all complementing each other, the orange hair with the beige wall color in the background, the eyes of the model matching the clothes having soft colors of green, beige and white.

The spread is an introduction to a series of photos and questions about the photographer.

The head text is extremely large, leaving only a bit of space for the beginning of the article. The title doesn’t mean anything at first, it sounds intriguing making the reader want to continue reading the article.

The subheading explains the contents of the upcoming photos and interview, giving credit to the photographer and speaker.

Under the heading and subheading the article and continues in the next pages, making the reader turn the page and continue the article, the size of the text is miniscule so the reader is most likely going to look at the the large photos rather than read the article.

2. PEACH T MAGAZINE

COVER -

This magazine strangely doesn’t have any mention of an issue, date or cover lines on the cover.

The cover is composed entirely of a main image, which is striking and attractive as it is colorful and very up to date with current trends in the way the model is dressed.

The masthead of the cover is noticeable due to the colors being neon pink with a yellow line under the title.

TABLE OF CONTENTS -

The table of contents of the spread is very clear, it is a single page with a series of smaller photos and with the page number under them, directing the reader to the page of the picture they like the most as the table doesn’t seem to give any title or mention of specificities of any of the articles. The only thing they give besides the photo and number is a name for ever woman portrayed in the photo, humanizing each model portrayed in order for the audiences to want to find out more about them.

DOUBLE SPREAD -

An article of one of the women can be seen on the double spread. The spread is very plain with a photo of the model and a small text and her name at the top, making it known that the article is about her. The colors are related to what the model is wearing.

While some magazines seem to capture reader through simplicity this magazine as it is most likely in its early stages with this being the first issue comes out as dull and plain, without any edge necessarily, while it can intrigue readers through its colors it doesn’t necessarily make me want to continue reading, it come across more as a flip through kind of magazine. However it still needs to be appreciated for its style and meaning behind each article, making it all about women integrating diversity and empowerment of each woman in the articles.

3. CRACK ISSUE 93

COVER -

While the cover does not have much writing on it, it dazzles readers through the notable and distinctive color differentiations of the Main Image the red background with sparks of darker and brighter red accompanied by the skin tone of the model with hints of bright green, they complement each other beautifully.

The masthead is large and bulky with a beige color, not standing out too much through color in order not to overpower the main image however engaging through its size.

There is only a single cover line on the cover, mentioning the woman on the cover, however maintaining a sense of mystery as the reader does not understand what ‘ Christine and the Queens ‘ necessarily means.

TABLE ON CONTENTS -

The table of contents is similar to the previous magazine ‘Peach T Magazine’ as it also basic, with just six photos with a title and page number underneath, it also has some specific pages with more important titles and articles at the bottom of the page.

The background is black, making the colorful small photos and titles stand out.

DOUBLE SPREAD -

The double spread of this issue is authentic and aesthetic, with an abundance of colors, all dark however still impactful. The right hand side is the most colorful, signifying the importance of the dates of the concerts inserted.

The photos of the concert dates are all black and white, letting the background colors of the page stand out.

The left hand side is with a black background, allowing the white colored font of the text to pop out.

After analysing three magazines, I have realised that I want my magazine to be simple yet not necessarily following conventions, as I do not like tag lines or any covers with too much going on, my magazine will be straight forward but not deviating from abstract style, topics or ideas.
